Das Salz wurde aus der hier in der Tiefe vorhandenen Sole gewonnen und per Schiff oder auf dem Landwege nach Hamburg und L\u00fcbeck transportiert. Dieser kleine Hafen an einem Nebenarm der Ilmenau war fr\u00fcher der wichtigste Warenumschlagplatz der Stadt. Der m\u00e4chtige mittelalterliche Kran diente zum Be- und Entladen der Schiffe. Er wurde per Muskelkraft durch Laufr\u00e4der im Inneren bewegt und konnte bis zu 3 Tonnen heben.
