Das <strong>Gutenberg-Denkmal<\/strong> auf dem <strong>Gutenbergplatz<\/strong>\u00a0vis-\u00e0-vis zum Staatstheater wurde im Jahr 1837 vom d\u00e4nischen Bildhauer <strong>Bertel Thorvaldsen<\/strong>\u00a0(1770-1844) geschaffen. Das Denkmal ist in sofern eine Besonderheit, weil hier zum ersten Mal \u00fcberhaupt eine b\u00fcrgerliche Person mit einem Denkmal geehrt wurde. Dem bekanntesten Sohn der Stadt,\u00a0<strong>Johannes Gutenberg<\/strong> (1400-1468), <br \/>\n der den Buchdruck mit beweglichen Lettern erfand, ein Denkmal zu setzen, war der Mainzer Bev\u00f6lkerung ein wichtiges Anliegen, das auch w\u00e4hrend der franz\u00f6sischen Besatzungszeit von Napoleon I unterst\u00fctzt wurde. Das Bronzedenkmal wurde im Jahr 2008 wegen erheblicher witterungsbedingter Sch\u00e4den vor\u00fcbergehend abgebaut und gr\u00fcndlich renoviert. Im Februar 2010 stand Johannes Gutenberg dann schlie\u00dflich wieder in frischem Glanz auf seinem Sockel.
