Das <strong>Falkirk Wheel<\/strong> ist ein weltweit einzigartiges <strong>Schiffshebewerk<\/strong>, das den <strong>Forth &amp; Clyde Canal<\/strong> mit dem <strong>Union Canal<\/strong> bei einem H\u00f6henunterschied von 35 m miteinander verbindet. Als man diese H\u00f6he noch auf herk\u00f6mmliche Weise \u00fcber 11 Schleusen \u00fcberbr\u00fccken musste, brauchte man mit einem Boot etwa einen halben Tag daf\u00fcr. \u00dcber das Falkirk Wheel verk\u00fcrzt sich diese Passage auf eine Viertelstunde.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Das <strong>Falkirk Wheel<\/strong>, benannt nach der Ortschaft <strong>Falkirk<\/strong>, in dessen N\u00e4he es sich befindet wurde im Jahr 2002 in Betrieb genommen. Dadurch dass hier die Boote in eine obere und untere Wanne einfahren entsteht ein ziemlich ausgewogene Gewichtsverteilung. Die 180\u00b0-Drehung kann so mit einem geringen Energieaufwand bew\u00e4ltigt werden. Zahnr\u00e4der sorgen daf\u00fcr, dass die beiden Wannen immer in der Waagerechten bleiben.
