Jahrhundert als Burg erbaut. Vermutlich gab es hier fr\u00fcher bereits eine salische oder staufische Festung. Im Jahr 1244 wurde erstmals eine\u00a0<strong>Reichsburg Oppenheim<\/strong>\u00a0urkundlich erw\u00e4hnt. Kurf\u00fcrst Friedrich V. veranlasste 1615 den schlossartigen Umbau der Burg. Das Schloss brannte allerdings bereits 1621 beim Gro\u00dfen Stadtbrand von Oppenheim aus und ist seitdem Ruine.\u00a0W\u00e4hrend des pf\u00e4lzischen Erbfolgekrieges wurde 1689 noch der Bergfried von franz\u00f6sischen Truppen gesprengt. In der Folgezeit wurde die Ruine von den B\u00fcrgern der Stadt als Steinbruch genutzt. Im 19. Jahrhundert ging die Ruine in den Besitz der Stadt Oppenheim \u00fcber. Es wurde auf dem Stumpf des Bergfrieds eine Aussichtsplattform geschaffen.
