Jahrhunderts oberhalb von St. Goar am Rhein erbauten\u00a0<strong>Burg Rheinfels<\/strong>, ist nach der Festung Ehrenbreitstein in Koblenz die zweitgr\u00f6\u00dfte Festungsanlage des <strong>Weltkulturerbes Oberes Mittelrheintal<\/strong>. <em>Graf Diether V. von Katzenelnbogen<\/em> lie\u00df die Burg 1245 als Zollburg errichten. Um 1570 herum lie\u00df <em>Landgraf Philipp der Gro\u00dfm\u00fctige von Hessen<\/em> die Burg in ein Renaissanceschloss umbauen. Die wehrhafte Festung konnte im Zuge der pf\u00e4lzischen Erbfolgekriege nicht von den Franzosen erobert werden, und \u00fcberstand die Zeit in der fast alle umliegenden Burgen geschleift wurden. Erst im Jahr 1766 zerst\u00f6rten Franz\u00f6sische Revolutionstruppen die Festung.
